What are the badminton rules?

Badminton and badminton rules may seem a bit complex, but it's not as complicated as it looks.
In this blog post you will find a brief explanation of the singles and doubles court and the different serve rules.

How big is a badminton court?

A badminton singles court is 13.4 meters long and 5.18 meters wide. This corresponds to the back line on the back line, while on the sideline it is the innermost line.

In doubles, there are slight changes to the court compared to singles. Here the court is 13.4 meters long and 6.1 meters wide. That is all the outer lines of the court.

How many points do you need to win in badminton?

Whether it is singles or doubles, best of three sets are played, with the set won by scoring 21 points, unless there is a tie at 20-20, in which case the first team to reach a two-point difference wins the set, with a maximum of 30 points.

When the first player reaches 11 points there is a 1 minute break (if needed), for set changes the break is 2 minutes.

In badminton, you always start by serving from the right side of the court, with the ball landing in your opponent's diagonal court.

If you have an even number of points you serve from the right side, while if you have an odd number of points you serve from the left side of the court. The serve must always go diagonally and pass the front service line to be in.
When serving in doubles, the length must reach the front service line, but the side line extends to the outside line, unlike singles.
If a serve lands in doubles between the front and back back line, the ball is out.

Once the game is underway, there are no rules and as long as you can get it down inside your opponent's half of the field, the point is yours.

We hope this explanation answered any questions you and your training partner may have about the rules.
